Workflow driven project management - have you workflowed lately?

The term "workflow" is unfortunately used loosely in the market place. Do not be fooled! Most systems claiming to be "workflow-based" or "workflow-driven" actually do not provide any workflows! They simply hard code a project-related business process the way they think you should be automating it, make a few settings optional, and call it a workflow.

Experts Corner

1) How do I Track Email Messages Sent from Tenrox R10?:

In R10, Tenrox tracks all email messages sent through workflow notifications, email reminders to complete or approve timesheets, etc...

Information is kept in a table (TMESSAGEQUEUE) in the Tenrox database to track such emails. This table holds information such as the date and time stamp of the messages, and whether they were sent successfully or not. It also records the number of attempts made to send a given email.

Note that the records inserted in this table are permanently stored in the table until they are purged.

2) What happened to Report Central and Report Designer in R10?

Prior to R10, when navigating to “Reports”, the end-user had the option to navigate either to “Report Central” or to “Report Designer”. Report Central was the area where users were able to run the reports and print them, whereas Report Designer was the area where the user uploaded new reports or modified the design of an existing report.

In R10 this process has been simplified; you can now find everything in one location by clicking Reports from the main menu, which provides you with the list of reports available to you through your designated security profile.

  • To run the report, simply click on it and the report parameters appear on the right hand side.
  • To modify the design of a report, simply right-click the report and select 'Design'. Other options appear, such as: Add to Favorites, Copy, Delete and Replace.
  • To upload, simply right-click on any placeholder report. You are then provided with the various upload options to choose from: New Tenrox Report and New OLAP Report.

Case Study: Candlewest Systems Group
ERP Consultant Candlewest Manages Its Own Resources With Tenrox

As an enterprise resource planning consultancy with a growing client base across Canada, Candlewest Systems Group found itself with a time management system that was not able to keep pace with its growing number of clients and consultants. As a reseller of Microsoft Dynamics GP and Syspro products, the company had developed its own application in the early days of its operations, but was well aware that the system had reached its limits.
